Lyrics

VERSE 1
Out of the dark, into the light
I clench my fists, open my eyes
There’s something new on my skin
I cry out, and breathe it in

CHORUS 1
I am born, I am born, I // Don’t know but I will learn why
And I’m gonna make with my time // Something beautiful

VERSE 2
Out of nothing, something grows
I can’t recall but somehow I know
I was there and the world was spinning
I was someone new, beginning

PRE-CHORUS 2
How did this come to be // Mystery breathing through me?
Why have I been so blessed // Mystery pounding in my chest?

CHORUS 2 (2x)
I am born, I am born, I // Don’t know but I will learn why
And I’m gonna make with my time // Something beautiful

VERSE 3
Now I keep turning ‘round the sun
My heart is learning to be a human
I get to live this day just once
The past is over, the future never comes

PRE-CHORUS 3
My god, this joy and sadness! // Hold on and the moment passes
And again I’ve just begun // Won’t learn the end ‘til I am done

CHORUS 3 (2x)
I am born, I am born, I // Don’t know but I will learn why
And I’m gonna make with my time // Something beautiful

CHORUS 4 (2x)
I am born, I am born, I // Don’t know but I will learn why
And I’m gonna make with my time // Something beautiful

Liner notes

I wrote this song on my birthday one year, thinking about the incredible gift of human birth. So improbable, unexplainable, and temporary… and so worthy of our awe.

In a sense, birth lays out the blueprint for how every adventure in our lifetime begins: after a period of comfort and “business as usual,” internal and external forces conspire to disturb our status quo. We begin to realize we have outgrown our current place… and that, whether we like it or not, the only way out is through.

Although we are continually thrust forward in time and space by forces beyond our control, there IS something within our control: What we make with what we are given.

The Dalai Lama points out that, out of the billions of years of our known universe, we get to be around in this form for only 100 years, give or take. What an unthinkable blessing! What a fleeting, precious opportunity. It’s ours to squander in fear and meaningless activity, or to honor and cherish — by waking up to who we are, discovering our true gifts, and contributing them to others as fully as we can.

I wrote this song to remind myself of this.

On a musical note, I want to thank some of my favorite rock bands — U2, Explosions in the Sky, and Dredg — for giving me a template for expressing the sense of poignancy, immediacy, and earnest wonder this song was calling for.

Fun fact: Verse 3 was inspired by "It's About Time," my favorite time travel romance movie!

Reflection

  1. What are you most grateful for in life?
  2. What fills you with awe and wonder?
  3. If there were something beautiful you could give this world, what might it be?
  4. What small step might you take toward that vision, in the next 2 days?
